Root Canal Therapy
Toothache
The first stage of periodontal disease has relatively minor symptoms. You will typically notice dark red or purplish gums, inflammation around the gums, bleeding when brushing and flossing, and halitosis. The gums may also feel a bit tender and sensitive.
Swelling & inflammation
You may notice swollen or inflamed gum tissue near your infected tooth, and this can indicate a serious infection.
Sensitivity & Tenderness
In addition to tooth pain, your tooth may feel more sensitive to very hot and cold foods or drinks, or to sugar. See Dr. Tori or Dr. Luis Mariusso right away if you recognize any of these signs of an infected tooth.

Still have questions?
We're here to help you!
Do root canals hurt?
No. Though popular culture may have you believe otherwise, the process is totally pain-free. You may experience some tenderness after your numbing wears off, but the process of getting a root canal will not hurt at all.
What is the root canal healing process?
After your root canal, the tissue around your tooth may be inflamed and tender, causing you some discomfort for a day or two. However, there is no prolonged healing process. You can get back to your day-to-day routine immediately after your appointment at Confident Smiles of Knoxville.
What causes infected teeth?
Infected teeth occur when the hard outer layers of your tooth are destroyed by an oral injury or an advanced cavity. When these layers are breached, the vulnerable and sensitive “pulp” inside your tooth is exposed to oral bacteria.
This results in an infection of the pulp. This is a serious issue, because the pulp contains the essential blood vessels and nerves that keep your tooth alive. If you don’t get a root canal, the tooth will eventually die and fall out of your mouth.
