A man with a bald head is smiling.

“The oral surgery went really well—I didn’t feel any pain. I felt like I could almost start eating anything I wanted from the first week on.

When I saw my new smile in the mirror… yeah, I was excited.”

Stay Comfortable at Our Office

At Confident Smiles & Implants, we offer two primary types of sedation for our patients. Laughing gas is an ideal choice for patients with mild anxiety or for those who simply want to remain comfortable during treatment. Oral conscious sedation is a better option if you’d like to be sedated more deeply for a lengthy procedure or to ease more severe dental anxiety.

Sedation Solutions to Keep You Comfortable

Gentle options for everything from mild anxiety to more complex procedures.

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is an ideal method of minimal sedation. If you opt for laughing gas during your procedure, you will wear a comfortable nose mask to inhale the sedative throughout your treatment.

Laughing gas will make you feel a bit “floaty” and disconnected from your body. It will also help reduce anxiety, and has analgesic (pain-relieving) effects which ensure you do not feel any discomfort during your procedure. One of the best things about laughing gas is that it only lasts about 5 minutes after your treatment, so you can go about the rest of your day as you normally would.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is taken in pill form about 1-2 hours before your appointment. It provides a deeper level of sedation compared to laughing gas. You’ll feel groggy during your appointment and may even fall asleep in the dentist’s chair. However, these effects may last up to 4-6 hours after your appointment, so you cannot drive yourself home or go back to work. You’ll need to make the necessary arrangements to plan for this before your appointment.

The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

Fight Back Against Anxiety

The biggest benefit of sedation is that it helps you manage dental anxiety to get the treatment you need. Many patients are nervous about dental procedures like fillings, or even regular six-month teeth cleanings. Sedation makes it possible to relax in the dentist’s chair.

Stay More Comfortable

Sedation makes dentistry more comfortable, which is a great benefit if you’re undergoing multiple dental procedures that require you to sit still in the dentist’s chair for a long period of time.

Treat a Strong Gag Reflex

Sedation can help mitigate a strong gag reflex, making it easier for our dentists to work on your rear teeth and provide you with the oral care you need. If you have a strong gag reflex, sedation will make your visit more enjoyable.

Mitigate Fear of Needles

Even patients who do not have dental anxiety may be nervous or afraid of numbing needles. Sedation can help calm this fear make it possible to relax throughout your entire procedure.

Is Sedation Right For Me?

As long as you are healthy and free of issues like allergies, medical conditions, or a history of drug abuse that may prevent you from being sedated, you’re a good candidate for sedation dentistry. However, before you can be sedated, you will need to discuss your medical history with the team at Confident Smiles & Implants to ensure that we can identify any potential risks or issues.

Will I be awake during my procedure?

That depends on the type of sedation used. With laughing gas, you'll be awake but relaxed. Oral conscious sedation often makes patients feel drowsy—and some even fall asleep. Regardless of the level, you’ll be comfortable and monitored the entire time.
