Can You Get Dental Implants With Gum Disease?

It would be nice if our permanent teeth would be just that… permanent. Unfortunately, statistics show that about 7% of people in the United States have lost at least one permanent tooth because of decay by the time they turn 17 years old.

And it's not just cavities. Reports show that periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of teeth loss among adults.

If that's the case for you, maybe you are now looking into restoration solutions such as Farragut dental implants.

But can you get implants if you have gum disease?

What Is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease in its most advanced form, is a condition that affects the tissues supporting the tooth. The problem with gum disease is that it can lead to tooth loss if it is not treated on time.

Dental Implants and Gum Disease

You need healthy jawbone and gum tissues to get a dental implant. If your gum disease is so advanced that it affects the bone structure and density, then it's probably impossible to get an implant. The mental post will lack the necessary support to fuse with the surrounding tissue and will likely fail.

But that doesn't mean that implants are completely out of the question for you.

There are various treatment plans that you can follow, depending on the severity of your issue. If your gum disease is only mild, then the dentist will likely treat it with deep cleaning.

But, if the disease has progressed so much that the bone structure has been affected, then you will likely need a bone graft.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that uses transplanted bone (natural or artificial) to add more density and rebuild a bone that's been affected by the disease. You will have to wait for a few months for the osseointegration process to be completed before you can move forward with your implant.

Keep in mind that you can develop gum disease after getting an implant too. So, it's paramount that you keep good oral hygiene and see your dentist regularly.
